Say What?!?

Normally I would try to limit or exclude making my blog political in anyway and I truly feel that I have been keeping any open mind in relation to the up coming Presidential election. So far I have not been overly impressed with either candidate and so I have tried be fair and look at both honestly. So in that spirit I was reading about the faith forum, on Relevant.com, that both candidates took part in at Saddleback Church. While reading some of the comments on the Relevant article someone mentioned an interview that Obama gave to the Chicago Sun Times called "I have deep faith" back in '04. I must admit there were somethings in the interview that made me uncomfortable; having said that I would encourage any of you who are interested to read it and let me know your thoughts on it.

I sometimes wonder why we place so much of our votes based on a person's religious beliefs. I do want a leader that has a moral compass in leading our nation. I watched the whole forum and I appreciated Obama's answers to faith questions that obviously came from a different stance on the issues from him. On the other hand, I felt like McCain was just citing answers that he knew would be right. Would I count on either man as a spiritual leader of our country? Not at all.

Just a side thought...I really appreciated what Obama said about abortion in the forum. I lean more pro-life and he is pro-choice, but he looked past the 2 choices and said that he wanted to do what he could to reduce the number of abortions in America...which is really what I want to see happen. Bush, a clearly pro-life president has seen abortion rates rise under his command...just a thought.

I would say after reading those articles that it still doesn't feel like Obama can just answer a question squarely. The only reason that faith might matter in an election is that it helps me to determine if I can trust what they say on other issues. But it isn't / shouldn't be the deciding factor.
